The Azores' first eco-beach resort, built from scratch by a surfer with something to prove about what sustainable design can look and feel like. The beach does the heavy lifting, but the pan-Asian kitchen, the organic farm behind it, and the Retreat wellness centre make the case that this was never just a pretty place to stay.

Santa Bárbara sits above one of São Miguel's best surf breaks, but the resort is quieter than that sounds. Thirty villas and studios spread across a cliffside site — dark polished concrete, cryptomeria timber, bamboo screens — with the black sand beach below and green volcanic hills behind. The Retreat Villas earn their name: upper-floor position, private jacuzzi on the terrace, Atlantic views in every direction. The restaurant is the real surprise: a pan-Asian fusion menu driven by produce from the resort's own 4,000 sqm organic farm, with ramen, Korean dishes and a signature Tuna Wellington that you didn't expect in the Azores but will remember. The wellness centre runs signature treatments and yoga classes, and the saltwater pool handles everything in between. It was built in 2015 by João Reis, a surfer-entrepreneur who wanted to prove that the island's first eco-resort could also be the most considered place to stay on it.

The incredible ocean views and perfectly minimal, Scandi-style interiors. I also absolutely love the concrete flooring and wood textures of the studios, they feel cosy and elegant, but still very much a part of the stunning surrounding property grounds.

Dinner at the main restaurant, where the kitchen does something unexpected: a pan-Asian fusion menu — ramen, Korean BBQ, Japanese-inflected fish — built almost entirely on produce from the resort's own organic farm and two on-site greenhouses. The Tuna Wellington is the signature. Come summer, the Areais Beach Club opens directly on the black sand for poke bowls and cold drinks while you watch the surfers.

On São Miguel’s north coast near Ribeira Grande, with the Atlantic right in front of you and a wilder, surfier feel than the island’s south side. You’ll want a car for exploring, but the beach is the daily anchor.
